Charles Henry Scidmore was born 24 Dec 1842, East Line, Malta Township, Saratoga Co, New York, the fifth of seven children.   (All were born in the same area.)   When his sister Abby Jane and her husband John Clancy Denton made plans for moving West, Charles and his brother John were not to be left behind, and by 1866 they had all moved by covered wagon westward and settled near Ottawa, LaSalle Co, IL.   Charles and his brother John took up a farm there as did Abby Jane and her husband John Clancy Denton.

There, Charles met Lidia A Lampman and they were married on 25 Dec 1867, Lidia's 21st birthday. Lidia was born 25 Dec 1846, Bennington, Bennington Co, VT, the daughter of Stephen V Lampman and Sarah Wright.   Lidia's parents were born and lived Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY, within 50 miles of Charles' birth place. [Note: We have yet to be able to find Sarah's parents or ancestors.]

Some time after Charles's marriage, his sister Abby Jane and her husband John Clancy Denton decided to pull up stakes and move westward again.   But after a few weeks of travel, they decided to return.   They continued on past Ottawa to Remington, IN, where John established a farm, but within a few years he died in a prairie fire.   Abby Jane and the children return to NY.

Charles and Alidia remained in LaSalle Co for the rest of their lives, living in Farm Ridge, Streator and Ottawa.   Lidia died 15 Apr 1923 and Charles three years later on 12 Mar 1926.   Charles and Lidia had a total of 11 children, 2 having died in infancy.   For more information on Charles Scidmore's parents and siblings, see: page 221, "Thomas Skidmore (Scudamore) 1605-1684" by Warren Skidmore - 1985.

Charles' brother John Scidmore married Mary E. Taylor and within a couple of years he continued west, 1st to Jasper Co, MO (1870 Census) and then to Page Co, IA. There he remained until his death.

Charles purchased a farm and settled in Grand Ridge, LaSalle County near Ottawa, IL. Charles and Lidia raised a large family in Farm Ridge, Streator and Ottawa and remained in LaSalle Co the rest of their life.
