THOMAS H HARVEY (As well as interesting facts on the family) THOMAS HARVEY had a shot gun. He left on his bay horse to see one of his
daughters.... I do not know which one. He left with the gun, but came back
with a guitar. He said he had traded the gun for the guitar... And when he
got old, he was gong to learn to play the guitar. He was 80 years old then. THOMAS HARVEY (As told to me by Thomas D. Harvey) would not cut the fire wood, but
stick two long logs in the fire place and as they burned, he just moved the logs into
the fire place. Of course, he had two logs sticking out into the room until the
logs burn down shorter. THOMAS HARVEY liked to drink and often got drunk. He was the first prisoner
in the Decatur Jail because he got drunk. He was a member of the Church of
Christ. He was told that if he got drunk again, he would be disfellowedshiped
from the church. He got drunk again and was disfellowshipped from the church.
He said he was the true Church of Christ and he disfellowshipped all of the congregation.
He was then a church of one member. The subject of Indian Blood came up once when Aunt Laura wanted Dad (Charles Harvey
brother of Laura) to sign a paper that they were part Indian. He would not.
He had a great philosophy about the Indians from the "Trail of Tears" to the time he
died. And it has all come true what would happen to them. That's a story I
must write about him sometime. Why would she want Dad to sign if Uncle Finley was
eligible? I don't think it matters much anymore, but it is interesting. Footprints Note: In previous letters it was said that Thomas Harvey had indicated he was 13 at the time the stars fell. In searching through different books we found the article below. I might add that at the time I was publishing my newsletter and everything was cut and paste by hand (not by computer). I found the article at the library and had a copy made. When I cut it out to fit the newsletter, I threw away the remaining pieces of paper. On that paper I had written down the book the article came from. All I can now say is that it came from a book on Astronomy. METEORITICS, the science dealing with meteors and meteorites. From ancient times men have valued meteoric iron; in some records of antiquity its origin in the sky is attested. The awe-inspiring noise and lights accompanying some meteoric falls convinced men of former times that meteorites came from the gods: accordingly they are widely found as objects of awe and veneration. This association of meteorites with the miraculous and religious made 18th century scientists suspicious of their reality. Members of the French Academy, then considered the highest scientific authority, were convinced that the fall of stones from heaven was impossible. Keepers of European museums discarded genuine meteorites as shameful relics of a superstitious past. Against this background, the German physicist Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni began the science of meteoritics in 1794, when he defended the trustworthiness of accounts of falls (see also Hraschina meteorite). A shower of stones that fell in 1803 at L'Aigle, Fr., finally convinced the scientific world of the reality of meteorites. Interest was intensified by the great meteor shower of 13 Nov 1833, visible in North America. Since the early 19th century many astronomers, physicists, chemists, and mineralogists have contributed to meteoritics. Collections of meteorites are to be found in most natural-history museums. Footprints Note: This meteor shower is estimated to have furnished 200,000 meteors for a given station between midnight and dawn, numbers of them brilliant, and many leaving trains. The terror excited among the masses and was seen from the mid-western United States to Europe. Our records will show 26 March 1820 date as his birth with the 26 March 1818 in the notes. It is very possible that Thomas mistakenly told some one he was 13 at the time of the meteorite shower or the age was mistakenly changed over the years. Yet when you read the census records of 1850 and 1860, there is a good indication his birth was in 1820 which verifies the "age 13, meteorite shower". ![]() Please place in the Subject Line: WEBPAGE-HISTORY
