THOMAS H. HARVEY "The Harvey Family in Tennessee" A follow up Report By: Max E. Reed 26 June 1989
![]()
In a previous FOOTPRINTS the discovery of census records for the family from
the second marriage of Thomas H. Harvey's father (name still unknown) was
reported. This article updates the history of that Harvey family.
![]() The name Erba is as transcribed into book form in the Webster Co. genealogy library. Previously the name was thought to be Eubee or Eirbee. Jacob and Pleasant Harvey were also found in the 1880 census and their families at that time were outlined in reference 1. In reference 1, the Harvey family was found in Dallas Co. in the 1850 census and in Webster Co. in the 1860 census, indicating that they had moved. Actually it was the county that moved. A section of Dallas Co. was made part of Webster Co. in 1855. This was the south east corner of Dallas Co. where the Harvey farm was located. So it is probable that the Harveys did not move between 1850 and 1860. Jacob Harvey - Jacob Harvey married Milly Sartin 27 March 1867 in Webster Co. Missouri. Jacob was 19 and Milly was 15 or 16. Millie seems to have a two year old son John Sartin at the time of the marriage. Two and one half years later, in June of 1870, Jacob Harvey is found working as a farm laborer on Pleasant Harvey's farm some 60 miles southwest of Webster Co. in McDonald Co. Jacob and Milly have a son in 1970 or 1971 which they name James. In 1872 or 1873 Jacob and Milly divorce.

James Harvey, the son of Jacob and Millie married Alpha Gallion on the 25th of January 1891 in Webster Co.

Pleasant and Martha were married on August 31, 1865 in Webster Co. The record may be found in Book 1, page 176 of the Webster Co. Missouri Marriage Records. Pleasant's son John R. Harvey was married to Lucy Thomas on December 14, 1892 in Webster Co. (Book 4 Webster Co Marriage Records). This shows that the Harveys maintained strong ties with Webster Co. through out the 19th century. John R. Harvey continued to live in Webster Co. and is shown in the 1900 census in High Prairie Township. He has a son Gayford, born in January 1895.

JOHN R. HARVEY - Living with John R. is Martha, a widow age 55. So, Pleasant has died between 1880 and 1900. There is no 1890 census to check on this matter, it burned in 1923. Gayford D. Harvey married Nannie Ferrier on 24 September, 1916 in Webster Co. (Book 9). In Book 10 of Webster County marriages, Ray L. Harvey, son of John Harvey is married to Bernice B. Vanatta on April 25th, 1925. So John R. had at least two sons. The 1910 Webster Co. census needs to be checked on this matter. Also, next year, the 1920 census will be released which may provide more information on John R.'s family. John Riley Harvey died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, March 31, 1944 in Conway Missouri (on the north border of Webster Co.). His obituary was carried in the Marshfield Mail paper dated April 6, 1944.
MARSHFIELD MO., APRIL 6, 1944 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR JOHN R. HARVEY HELD TUESDAY AFTERNOON John Riley Harvey, 71, died at 10:20 o'clock Friday night March 31, at his home near Conway after an extended illness. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Lucy May Harvey; a son, Roy Harvey of Ft. Leonard Wood; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Theora Pilkington of Diggens. Funeral services were held at Good Hope Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. L. L. Rodgers of Marshfield officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery under direction of Rainey Funeral Home. Good Hope Southern Baptist Church and Cemetery is located about 3 miles east of Marshfield on road DD. The grave site may be located by taking the first right after crossing the railroad tracks, continuing a quarter mile on gravel road, turning right down a small lane to the Church and Cemetery. John Riley's grave is located next the parents and grand-parents of his wife Lucy M. Thomas. The headstone lists dates as 1873-1944. The other four stones give the dates of Lucy's parents and grand-parents:

Is John Riley's surviving son Roy the same person as Ray L. Harvey in the marriage books? Or are Roy and Ray brothers? Lucy May Harvey, John Riley's wife died on June 25, 1972. The Marshfield Mail carried her obituary on Thursday, June 29, 1972.

MRS LUCY MAY HARVEY
Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy May Harvey, 99, of 1217 Willow
Lane, Springfield, were held Tuesday in Barber-Edwards-Arthur Chapel in
Marshfield with the Rev. Thomas McLain officiating. Burial was in Good
Hope Cemetery near Marshfield.
She died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday in Grand Acres Nursing Home, Springfield,
following a long illness. She is survived by one son, Roy, of the home;
three granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren. Escorts were Richard
Wissbaum, A. C. Keaster, Marion Wilson, Earl DeLo, Bill Marlin and Quentin
Marlin.
Lucy is buried beside John Riley and her parents and grand-parents. Dates on her headstone are 1872-1972. Roy is still living at Lucy's death. He is " of the home". Does this mean he is also in the nursing home? In the records of Liberty Cemetery of Webster Co. is found one Raymond D. Harvey (1899-1972) and Jessie M. Harvey (1911 -1980). Could this be Roy having died after Lucy but the same year? Or could this be Ray L. of the marriage records? Are they the same person? John and Lucy's son Gayford D. Harvey is interned in Graham Cemetery in Dallas Co. Dates on the record books are 18 January 1895 - 1 August. No year is given for the death. Next to Gayford's grave is John Homer Harvey 8 November 1922 - 31 July 1934. John Homer is presumably Gayford's son. Continuing with the history of the children of Pleasant Harvey: his daughter Theora (b. 1870) was married to Noah L. Pilkington at an unknown date. As his obituary states, Theora is still living as of John Riley's death in 1944. Theora and her husband are buried in Gentry Cemetery, Hazelwood Township, in Webster County.

The 1900 Webster Co. census shows Theora and Noah living in Hazelwood Township. Theora has been married for 14 years giving the marriage date as ca. 1886. Theora has 7 children and all are living. Noah's mother Matilda, age 67, is living with them. Another large Pilkington family, that of Albert C. is living next door apparently a brother to Noah.

Pleasant Harvey named his last son Jacob N. after his brother. Jacob N. was born in 1875. Jacob N. was married to L. B. Letchworth on 30 December 1894. Book 5 of the Webster County marriage records gives Martha Harvey as the mother of J. N. Harvey and W. P. Letchworth as the father of L. B. Letchworth. The fact that Martha is listed and not Pleasant indicates Pleasant died before 1894. The 1900 census shows that L. B. is Lillie B. and that Lillie and Jacob are living in High Prairie Township of Webster Co. Jacob N. has two children. Interestingly, he says he was born in Kansas which does not agree with the 1880 census were he is listed as born in Missouri. Jacob and Lillie have two children both living (2/2).

Fred Harvey married Eliza Binnell on August 5th, 1910. Of the 8 Harvey children listed in the 1850 and 1860 census, only two have been considered at this time. They are Pleasant and Jacob. JOEL Z. HARVEY - Nothing is known about the life or fate of Joel. JAMES HARVEY - It is believed that James is the Harvey who married Rebecca Dill and died shortly after the birth of their son Thomas. Thomas married Mary J. Fulton and moved to Kansas. This was covered in a previous Footprints article. BENNET HARVEY - Nothing is known about the destiny of Bennet Harvey. ERBA HARVEY - Nothing is known of Erba. Even his name is uncertain. JANE HARVEY - Amy Jane Harvey married Joel N. Kilburn on 30 December, 1860. Ceremony was by Justice of the Peace J. A. Cattrell as recorded in book 1 of Webster County marriage records. The census records have not been examined for further information on Jane. JOHN HARVEY - John Harvey was married at the time of the 1860 census. He and his wife had a daughter Mary, 5 years old. His wife Virginia, was listed in the 1850 Dallas Co. census as the daughter of Daniel and Polly [Spain] Graves.

After the 1860 census, in 1861, John and Jennie (as Virginia was called) had a second child, John Dan Harvey. John Dan later married Sally Falkson, but no more is known of him or his family at this time. Sometime after 1861, John Harvey died. Virginia married Gabriel William Hanby on June 7th, 1866. This marriage is recorded in Book 1, page 200 of Webster Co. Missouri as the marriage of Gabriel Hamby to Mrs. Virginia Harvey (Hamby is an error, its Hanby). Two years later on November 22, 1868, page 254 of Book 1 records the marriage of Miss Mary Harvey to Joseph H. Hanby. Joseph H. is the son of Gabriel and Mary the daughter of John and Virginia. Virginia and Gabriel had four children. By 1870, Gabriel and his family had moved to Carroll County, Hickory Township, Arkansas. Carroll County is just across the Missouri/Arkansas border south of Webster Co. In Carroll county, James Rufus Hanby, Gabriel's son by a previous marriage, began what would become the career destiny of many members of the family. James Rufus (who married Virginia Harvey's niece) began an operation that catapulted the family into a position wherein they became known as the " Lumber Kings of Carroll County." Their history may be found in Goodspeed's "History of Northwest Arkansas, 1889." Gabriel Hanby was himself the descendent of a well documented Hanby ancestry. Richard Hanby (b. 1597 England) brought his family to the New World in 1642, having been given a 2500 acre land grant on the north side of the York River in the Virginia Colony. With Richard Hanby's son, William Hanby, the family name then went to what would become New Jersey. William Hanby settled in the Penn's Neck area of Salem County after he paid "quitrent" on 210 acres of land to Governor William Penn in 1667. It was there that Jonathan Hanby was born in 1741, as a son of John and Susannah (Thompson) Hanby, Jr. The May 1983 Daughters of the American Revolution magazine gave information on Jonathan Hanby. "Captain Hanby served in both the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution. In August 1779, Jonathan Hanby, along with Patrick Henry and several other prominent men, was recommended to His Excellency, Governor Thomas Jefferson, as a proper person to serve in the Commission of the Peace of Henry County. In 1790 Patrick County was formed from Henry; in 1792 Jonathan Hanby was named Justice of the Court of Patrick County". "Today Captain Jonathan Hanby rests in a marked grave at Creasey's Chapel, Patrick County, Virginia. It was Jonathan Hanby's grandson, Gabriel Hanby, who would pioneer the trail West." Gabriel W. Hanby was born March 6, 1819, in Virginia, a son of William and Sarah (Waller) Hanby. Gabriel Hanby began his western migration. In the early 1840's he was in Henry County Tennessee where he married Mahala Swor on June 27, 1843. Seven years later in 1850, Gabriel and Mahala (Swor) Hanby were residents of District 26 of Dallas County, Missouri (the same district the Harveys were living in). Mahala died in 1864 and Gabriel was united in marriage with Virginia (Graves) Harvey, the widow of John Harvey, two years later in Webster Co. (Part of Dallas Co. became Webster Co. in 1855, so they did not necessarily move)

Mary Elizabeth Harvey died young, at age 40, in July 1895, nine years before the death of her mother Virginia Harvey. Two of Mary's children, Winnie Virginia and Joseph Harden Jr. are in the photograph with their grandmother Virginia (Harvey) Harden at the end of this article. The author is indebted to Mrs. Nettie Gorman of Marshfield, Missouri who supplied copies of the marriage and cemetery records of Webster County. Also, gratitude is extended to Cora Kyle of Bow Washington who sent all the information on the Hanby connection and the photographs. A final mystery... no family named Harvey has been found in the mid-19th century Webster or Dallas Co. census records which is not related to the line of Thomas H. Harvey's father. Yet, in book one of the Webster Co. marriage records, where the marriages of Pleasant and Jacob are recorded, is recorded the marriage of Patrick Harvey to Sarah A. Ichor. The date is December 19, 1869. Who is Patrick Harvey? We have not discovered all there is to know about the Harvey family of Webster Co. Missouri. ![]() Please place in the Subject Line: WEBPAGE-HISTORY
