John Roote - his father was dead, he lived with an uncle, a brother of his father and was adopted. His uncle was a man of wealth advanced in years a zealous opponent of popery and said to be one of the nobility. He insisted that John should go into Cromwell's army to fight Charles I. He had an aversion to war joined a party of Puritans and came to this country about 1640 settling at Farmington, Conn. His brother, Thomas came to America in 1637 and settled at Hartford, Conn. Another Thomas Rootes(notice he adds "s" to name) came to Salem, Mass. as early as 1636 and his relationship to the other two is not quite clear.

From these three spring all the Roots in America. Three lines known as the Farmington line, the Hartford line and the Salem line -- E.N. Root and Joseph C. Root both belonging to the Farmington line of which John Roote aforesaid is the first. He married Mary Kilbourn about 1640. She was born 1619 at Wood Dillon England and came to America in the ship "Increase" in 1635. She was the daughter of Thomas and Frances Kilbourn. Both were members of Congregational Church. John died Aug 1684, age 76 leaving an estate worth œ819. She died 1697 age 78. Their children were:
