Footprints Web Page News - May 2003
Footprints Of Our Past
by Don P. Wright

mad hacker

If you haven't seen my office, you should take a look to get an idea of how things happen around here. We seem to jump from one thing to another, not quite finishing what I had been working on.

Again... Again... and Again

Well, it has happened again.... It seems that as soon as I get rolling and start getting things caught up, something else happens. This time I lost the Hard Drive on my old faithful 400 MHz e-Machine. First it was the Power Supply, then the A:\ drive, and finally the Hard Drive. Much to my displeasure (and pleasure), the decision was made to purchase a new and faster machine. No skimping on this one. It has a 80GB hard drive and I had a second 60GB hard drive added. It came with a CD, DVD, and a CD/DVD recorder. This should do me for a couple of years.

Saving My Data

I was lucky to some extent. "Good Guys" (where I purchased my computer) was able to retrieve some of my data from the old hard drive. My databases had already been backed up as was my web pages and histories. They were a few days old, but there was very little loss. However, my e-Mail was on the lost Hard drive. They were able to retrieve part of it but not all, so there is some loss there. If you have sent me an e-Mail that has not been answered, please try again.

Database Surnames

Our database has over 158,000 names all realted. There are over 2300 different surnames. We have made a list of surnames on the database and added them to the Web Page at: Alphabeticl Listing

Family Reunions
or Gatherings

If you plan to have a reunion or family gathering of any type, we will gladly post it on these web pages for you in our "Calender of Comming Events" .

BookMarking
The Web Page

Many times when I add a page on the Web Site, I locate it in the proper location for that particular family. Then later I find that it does not fit properly and must be relocated. In reality, it doesn't have to be moved, but we have to renumber it which makes it easier to find when I need to make changes.

By bookmarking the Home Page, you will never loose your connections to the Web Site. If the individual page that you have bookmarked changes, you will still be able to find it through the Home Page.

Rebuilding Footprints
Web Site

Since no work has been accomplished on the Web Site since December 2001, and many changes need to be made, we are attempting to rebuild the web site as we correct the pages. One item that will be corrected is the removal or reconfiguring the music.

Many visitors complained that if they did not have the music program, it would disrupt the web page. Although I have the program, I can understand their feeling as I hate to see all these drop down menus all through any program. We have replaced the Music program and reconfigured how it is to be set up. We hope this solves the problem.

Because of all the changes there may be some confusion in moving from page to page as some pages will be linked properly and others may not. We hope you will notify us if you find that a link will not work.

This is the first issue of the "Year 2003" Footprints Web Page News. Hopefully we will have time to keep it going, month to month. We will try to discuss anything you would like. Feel free to ask for any subject to be discussed.

Adding New Footprints
Web Pages

We have many pages to be added, and they will be in time. Many of our readers have submit their information and we have placed it in folders by Surname. Also included in this folder is all data submitted by e-mail that has been filed on a floppy disk. Each folder is worked on, one at a time. We try to get all the data posted before we go on to the next surname. The folder is then placed back in file to save all new information for that surname.

If you haven't done so, you should visit the Read Me pages.

E-Mail Attachments

Many of us are a little hesitant about receiving attachments via E-Mail. There is a solution for this. Having been hit by a virus that destroyed my computer, I am very hesitant and will open attachments only under certain conditions.

With windows, you can open more than one program at a time. A file can be typed in just about any Word Processor, or Note Pad and copied to your e-mail as part of the message. This would eliminate the use of an attachment.

Open your word processor or note pad and write your note or make your charts or what ever. Hightlight and copy the file. Then open your e-mail start your message and then paste in the file you had copied. This eliminates the need for an attachment.

Submitting Photographs - Outlook and other e-mail programs allow you to include photos in the body of the message. Use this where possible.

Photos may be submitted as attachments. However we will not open an attachment unless:

  1. We know and have been in contact with the sender.
  2. You send a note to DonWright@footprints.org letting us know they are being sent.
  3. You add a note to the e-mail describing the photos and include your name and ID.
Lost E-Mail

All e-mail sent to Footprints between December 2001 and June 2002 was lost due to the virus . Many of my notes that I had on file in my e-mail folders prior to December were also lost as well as my Address Book.

I then rebuilt my address book and individual e-mail file folders. These were lost when the Hard Drive failed. However "Good Guys" were able to retrieve some of my e-mail folders.

If you submitted data or change of address during this period or even before, be aware that it is no longer in file. A few of the items had been moved to a holding folder for the web page, and were saved in the recent loss.

If you submitted a change of address in the past year or so, we would appreciate it if you would send it again to make sure we have it on file. This will also allow us to update our Address Book.

   We Need Your Help

We need your help in many areas. We try to check every page and their links off line before we add them to the Web Site. We still make errors, but with your help we can correct those errors.

Broken Links - Broken links, missing pages, missing photos, are all problems we have incurred in the past. If you find any problems, please contact

WEBMASTER@footprints.org

Names on E-Mail - Please insure that your first and last name is in the body of all e-mails sent to us. We maintain copies of all e-mails and file them in both electronic folders and physical folder (printed copy) by name. Many e-mail programs add the name, but not all.

Changing Addresses - Lately we have been having problems contacting people when we find information for them. If you change your e-mail address, please let us know. Send all
e-mail address changes to

WEBMASTER@footprints.org.

I add all new names to my address book when the e-mail comes in. We have no way to contact you unless you keep us up to date.

Surnames Listed
on Web Page

There are many Surnames listed in our Database. Many of you have ask when their surname will be used.

The addition of a series of pages for a surname will depend on the information we have available to use to get the pages started. We need the history of the family, and if possible, including when they first arrived in this country.

Along with that, a descendants list. This will allow others to check to see if their particular family is listed, and if not they can add their information.

Most important, with the history, we need your first and last name and e-mail address. (Included in the body of the message).
