At one time I listed different so called virus' that people have found. Most had not been proven to be true so we discontinued to list them. Because the latest virus has done so much damage, I thought I would list it to make sure all are aware of it. It had been all over the news so is something that all should be reminded of anyway. Now we have added a new scam to our alerts. If anyone has more information on this, please let us know.

VIRUS ALERT!
"A Virtual Card for You"
"An Internet Flower For You"

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) and by McAfee (/www.mcafee.com) as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN (www.cnn.com). This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as you get the mail, delete it. Please pass on this mail to all your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You", do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries(.dll files) from your computer.

Your computer will not be able to boot up.

Telephone Scam
I received the following from "Jerry Swenson" and about a dozen different people.

-----Original Message-----
From: Al Hoyle hoyle8@earthmax.net

WARNING - PLEASE INFORM YOUR CHILDREN ALSO

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.

Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.

I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific Bell,MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too. After checking with Verizon they said it was true so do not dial (9), zero(0), the pound sign # and hang up for anyone.

NOTE: From Footprints
I don't always pass on items of this nature as I don't know how accurate they are. However, a number of years ago, we noticed a number of phone calls (over $200 worth) charged to our account, being made from an unknown party. I couldn't understand this so I called the number listed on our bill, and found that it was the local District Attorney's Office. They said that they did not make any of the calls and could not understand how or why they were made. I then referred it to the Telephone Company and they investigated the problem. The Telephone Company eventually credited our account for the calls. They found that prisoners were making the calls, when they were visiting the DA's office. We never did find out how they were able to do it, but the DA no longer allows calls to be made from their office by prisoners.
